This Is England

A very interesting movie. That's the best way to describe This Is England. The movie is about a troubled young kid who finds refuge from his problems when he befriends a gang of skin heads. Everything is on the up and up until he meets an extremly nationalistic skinhead named Combo who takes the young boy, named Shaun, under his wing. Things begin to fall apart from there as racial issues enter Shaun's life. Combo's hatemongering leads to an ultimate act of violence and Shaun realizes what he has become.

This movie has recieved several international awards including the Best Newcomer award in the Bitish Independent Film Festival, which is where the film is from (if you couldn't tell from the title). This film will make you feel. It will make you feel happy, sad, angry, and a good many other emotions. The first half of the movie is just about Shaun's happy-go-lucky adventures with his new "family" and the second half deals with the very real issue of nationalism and immigration in England during the 1980's. I wasn't quite sure how I felt about the movie after I saw it, but I've decided that I really like it. Like I said, it's very interesting and quite different from most movies. I'm not entierly sure what genre this would fall under. If I had to call it anything, I would have to say it's a good example of realism. Check out the trailer below and see if it looks interesting to you.

Under The Rotunda

One of my friends who goes to Berklee College of Music recently became a DJ for Berklee's radio station (BIRN). He has amazing taste in music (check out his blog here if you don't believe me) thus his radio show is quite stellar as well. His show is called Under The Rotunda (hence the title) and broadcasts each Tuesday from 9-11 P.M. EST. I believe this is a link to his show. It will only be him if you check it out at the specified time and day, otherwise it's whoever is broadcasting when you click on the link. The show is broadcast live via the internet and plays through iTunes. If the link doesn't work or you have any other questions about the show go to his blog and ask him. I just realized I forgot to mention that the person is Keith Nelson. I listened to his show last weak and I loved it. Here's the playlist from last week's show:

Sondre Lerche - Airport Taxi Reception (from Phantom Punch)
Sondre Lerche - John, Let Me Go (from Phantom Punch)
Radiohead - Faust Arp (from In Rainbows)
Radiohead - House Of Cards (from In Rainbows)
Rogue Wave - Bird On A Wire (from Descended Like Vultures)
Rogue Wave - Lake Michigan (from Asleep At Heaven's Gate)
Dappled Cities - Holy Chord (from Granddance)
Dappled Cities - Fire Fire Fire (from Granddance)
Tokyo Police Club - Nature Of The Experiment (from A Lesson In Crime EP)
Tokyo Police Club - Citizens Of Tomorrow (from A Lesson In Crime EP)
Vampire Weekend - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa (from Vampire Weekend EP)
Vampire Weekend - A-Punk (from Vampire Weekend EP)
Voxtrot - Fast Asleep (from Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives EP)
Voxtrot - The Start Of Something (from Voxtrot EP)
Illinois - Nosebleed (from What The Hell Do I Know? EP)
Illinois - Headphones (from What The Hell Do I Know? EP)

I hope you all check his show out and enjoy it. I highly recommend it.

Chicago 10

There were so many good films at the Chicago International Film Festival this year, but I missed many of them. One I was particularly sad about missing was a film called Chicago 10. There is next to no information on this movie outside of the one paragraph wikipedia article and the short bio that was in the pamphlet for the film festival. I can't even find a real release date. I'll just have to keep looking out I guess. The film debuted in the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.

So this is what I can gather from what I've found. The movie seems to be about the group of protestors that were arrested after the 1968 democratic convention. Most noteably Abbie Hoffman and Bobby Seale. It follows thier trial and the actual protest it's self. The movie uses real vintage film from the protest, interviews, and is even animated at times. I couldn't even find a trailer, so instead I've decided to post the few clips I could find. It looks quite interesting and if anyone finds out anything new about it, drop me a line. Also, if anyone actually saw it, tell me what you thought of it.

I'm Not There

So I still have to post my review of The National and Of Montreal (both were quite good in case you were wondering), but for now I must discus a movie trailer I just saw. I attended the Chicago International Film Festival last weekend and saw August Rush (excellent movie). As I was walking out of the theatre, I saw a poster for a new Bob Dylan movie. Now there are a few movies out there about Bob Dylan and why shouldn't there be? He was an amazing person. This new movie isn't like the others though. In the new movie, I'm Not There, Bob Dylan is played by several actors including Cate Blanchett. There is a total of 8 actors playing one of the greatest men of the 20th century. Outside of film festivals, the movie releases November 21st. You better believe I'll be seeing this movie. Check out the trailer that I posted below and I hope you'll agree with me.

Reasons to be happy

So life has been treating not only me well recently, but it has also been especially kind to the world. Here are some reasons why people should be happy

Globally: Radiohead has announced that their next album titled "In Rainbows" will be coming out on October 10th. They announced this exactly ten days before the album was to be released. How cool is that? You can preorder it (for download) for free right now at their website.

Locally(Chicago area): Girl Talk has just announced two shows (one all ages, one +18) at the Metro on January 26th (yes, two shows in one day...well one night). Also, MDS has chosen Chicago as the place for this year's national convention. Everyone should go.

Me: Life is beautiful.
